On 29th March 2026, the Mumbai Indians and the Kolkata Knight Riders played their first match of IPL 2026 at Wankhede Stadium. The match was intense, and the Mumbai Indians broke records in the very first match of the 2026 campaign of IPL. One of the two records broken by the Mumbai Indians in the first match of IPL 2026 is their winning the first match of IPL for almost 13 years.

Addressing the win of MI in their first IPL 2026 match, young Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi said, “I have seen Mumbai win the first match for the first time.” The last time the Mumbai Indians won the first match of IPL was in 2012, when Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was just one year old. The second jinx that was broken by the Mumbai Indians is chasing down a target of 220 plus.

Mumbai Indians winning the toss

Mumbai Indians got the upper hand against the KKR at the initial phase of the game when they won the toss. In a pitch like Wankhede, chasing is comparatively easy because of the underlight effects and the fast outfield. KKR has to bat first, and they put up a really good fight against the experienced bowlers of the Mumbai Indians. After an aggressive start from the captain, Ajinkya Rahane, and a little bit of support from Finn Allen, KKR put up the score of 78 runs for 1 wicket of Finn Allen.

The powerplay was for Kolkata Knight Riders for actually impressive as they put up a huge score of 78 runs in just 6 overs. The captain, Ajinkya Rahane, was leading from the front and played a reliable knock.

Debut of Shardul Thakur

The debut of Shardul Thakur was very impressive from the MI side. This experienced Indian bowler found the first breakthrough for the Mumbai Indians by catching out the dangerous Finn Allen with a slower bouncer. The catch was taken by Tilak Verma, and Shardul Thakur dismissed Finn Allen for just 37 runs.

After dismissing Finn Allen, Shardul Thakur didn't stop and continued his domination by taking another wicked which is of the most expensive player, Cameron Green. A wide, slower short ball from Shardul Thakur was enough to dismiss Cameron Green with a simple catch by Sherfane Rutherford on the short third position.

The momentum of the game shifted drastically after the wicket of Cameron Green. Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of KKR, and the Young prodigy Angkrish Raghuvanshi made a reliable partnership; however, Shardul Thakur did it again. Ajinkya Rahane goes for a short after seeing a ball in the slot; however, he didn't time it well enough. An easy catch was made by Hardik Pandya, who was fielding in the cover area. After the constant fall of wickets, KKR was still able to put up a target of 221 for MI.

Domination of Mumbai

The second inning started with Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. Surprisingly, unlike last year, Rohit Sharma was now playing as a full-time player rather than an impact substitute. The Mumbai Indians campaign started their batting with aggression and discord, a massive 80 runs just in the power play over without a single wicket lost.

The bowlers of the Kolkata Knight Riders have no solution for the domination of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. eventually the Mumbai Indians scored a total of 122 runs in the first 10 overs of the game. Multiple maximum and missed fieldings happened during the first 10 overs of the game, where Vaibhav Arora dropped an easy catch in the 10th over.

Finally, in the 12th over of the game, Vaibhav Arora was able to dismiss Rohit Sharma; however, the damage was already done because he scored a massive 78 runs in 38 balls.

Easy win for Mumbai

After a comfortable start by both Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar Yadav was brought in as an impact sub. however the first match was not very impressive from Suryakumar Yadav as he was caught out by Kartik Tyagi for just 16 runs. This was the first time since 2024 that Surya Kumar Yadav was dismissed for less than 25 runs.

Ultimately Mumbai Indians won the match in 19.1 overs with six wickets in hand. The KKR bowlers have no answer for the questions asked by the MI batters. Every bowler from KKR had an economy of more than 10 during the match.

The first match was very memorable for the Mumbai Indians fans and campaign; however, it was a devastating loss for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Their biggest weakness in bowling is what makes them an uncertain team. They are not able to defend even a massive target of 220. Remarkable performance was made by the Mumbai Indians in terms of both batting and bowling.
