On 25th March 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a shocking revelation. For the second time, the BCCI authority has decided to skip the opening ceremony of IPL 2026. Recently, there were speculations regarding the much-awaited opening ceremony of IPL 2026; however, the authorities have now confirmed that the ceremony will not happen to show sensitivity and respect towards the 11 victims of the stampede tragedy that happened on 4th July. The stampede happened last year during the maiden IPL trophy celebration for RCB, resulting in the tragic incident where 11 innocent life was lost.
Statement made by the BCCI secretary
According to the statement made by the BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, “Due to last year's project incident on June 4th, there will be no formal function on the day of the start of IPL 2026 in Bengaluru. The BCCI is not organising any cultural or entertainment show at the start of IPL 19 as a mark of respect to the departed soul due to the tragedy on June 4th 2025.”
The BCCI secretary concluded his statement by saying, “However, the BCCI and IPL governing Council are planning a grand entertainment function at the closing ceremony of IPL on the day of the final, which is 31st May”. With this statement, the fans are relieved, and the opening ceremony will be compensated with a grand closing ceremony. The decision to skip the opening ceremony is appreciated by multiple individuals because it offers respect to the individuals who lost their lives during the stampede of the RCB victory.
Opening ceremony of IPL 2025
The opening ceremony of IPL 2025 is one of the grandest. Many Bollywood superstars and fan favourite singers were present at the opening ceremony, and everyone enjoyed themselves. The opening ceremony of IPL last year happened at Eden Gardens in Kolkata because KKR won the IPL preceding season. Many big names, including superstar Shah Rukh Khan, singer Shreya Ghoshal, and Karan Aujla, were present at the opening ceremony and performed for the fans. A dance performance by actress Disha Patani was also a part of the IPL opening ceremony of 2025.
Grand ending ceremony
According to the reports of The Times of India, the secretary of BCCI, Devajit Saikia, said that IPL 2026 will have an ending ceremony. The final of IPL 2026 will be played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, and the fans can enjoy the ending ceremony that will be done with full entertainment.
The BCCI authorities will make sure the fans will enjoy every moment of the IPL 2000 26, and the opening ceremony will be compensated by a grand ending ceremony. Since the opening match and the final of IPL 226 will both be played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the fans in Bengaluru will not have to miss any entertainment.
Honoring the lost lives
The BCCI authorities and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru will honour the 11 lives that were lost in the stampede incident during the victory celebration of IPL by RCB. According to the report from The Times of India, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru will honour them by keeping 11 seats permanently at the venue, and the players will wear jersey number 11 during practice. The players will also wear black arm bands in matches that represent the importance of the lives that were lost during the stampede incident.
Breaking the norms
Traditionally, the first match of the IPL season was between the two finalists of the preceding season; however, the authorities have broken this norm in IPL 2026. Last year the final was played between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings so traditionally the match of for the first IPL match of 2026 will be RCB vs PBKS. But the authorities have now broken this norm, and the first match of IPL 2026 will be played between RCB and SRH. The match will be played at the home ground of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, M Chinnaswamy Stadium, and a total of 11 seats will be left vacant to honor the lives of people lost during the stampede.
IPL has always been a festival for India, and everyone enjoys IPL to the fullest. The opening ceremony has always been a significant part of IPL, and it is only the second time the opening ceremony has not been conducted. The first time the opening ceremony was not conducted was in IPL 2019 because of the Pulwama attack. It is a great step by the authorities to honour the lost life and carry forward with the tournament.
