The US entrepreneur acquired the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals by leading a consortium among other industry leaders. According to the information, the franchise was sold to the US based entrepreneur for a total of 1.63 billion dollars, or more than 15000 crore Indian rupees. As per the sources, Somani was backed by American Businessman Rob Walton, the owner of Walmart, and the Hamp family. The sale made Rajasthan Royals the most expensive franchise in the history of IPL after the sale of RCB.

The process of acquisition of Rajasthan Royals was started last year, with investment bank the Raine Group acting as an advisor. There were multiple, including the Aditya Birla group and US based sports advisor dubbed Blitzer; however, the Consortium, headed by Somani, was solid, and it eventually won the ownership race of RR. The consortium included owners of NFL franchise including Rob Walton, the owner of the Denver Broncos, and the Hamp family, led by Sheila Ford, the owner of the Detroit Lions and a senior member of the Ford Motor Company dynasty.

He is the co-owner of Motor City Golf Club and an early investor in TGL Golf League

He first invested back in 2021, as he said that the league has “ huge potential” and he stated, “We see huge potential with this investment, and we are excited for the future of the IPL”. 

According to the information and a report from the Times of India, the net worth of Kal Somani is worth more than 110 billion US dollars, and his considered one of the wealthiest sports owners in the United States of America.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the world's largest alternative asset management firm, Blackstone Inc., was ready to invest 200 to 300 million US Dollars in either the Rajasthan Royals or Royal Challengers Bengaluru. After finalizing their decision, the company decided to invest in Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
