While some individuals are saying that the decision made by KKR management is remarkable because it will help Rinku Singh to develop leadership skills in the early phase of his career.

Rinku, the vice captain

The announcement of Rinku Singh leading the team as the vice captain was made by the Managing Director of KKR Mr Venky Mysore, during a Precision event on Tuesday. Until last year, the vice captain's duty was on the shoulders of Venkatesh Iyer; however, he was released by the team ahead of IPL 2026 during the auction. It was the very first time Rinku Singh has captains ship duty as he had never captained any T20 side; however, he had been representing KKR since his IPL debut in 2018.

The absence of KKR veteran player Andre Russell will also play a significant role in the performance of Rinku Singh. With Andre Russell, Rinku Singh has a free hand because he can handle the power heading. Now, with the retirement of Andre Russell, Rinku Singh will have to step up and finish the inning with responsibility. The head coach of KKR, Abhishek Nayar, stated, “Over the years, we have seen Rinku Singh evolve not only as a cricketer but also as a leader. For the past couple of years, his performance has spoken for itself, and I think it is the right time he takes some responsibility.”

He further sad “We wanted to, with the big power hitter Russell gone, we wanted a little more responsibility for Rinku to shoulder, and I feel it is the perfect time for being a World Cup champion to come in and take the responsibility and help Ajinkya Rahane take the reins over”.

Long-term investment

The decision to make Rinku Singh the vice captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders is a long-term investment made by the KKR management. This will help Rinku Singh to develop captainship skills at an early stage of his journey and allow him to understand how to make decisions. This will enhance his overall capabilities as a player and will be very beneficial for his future both as a franchise and in international cricket.

The KKR management is not just making Rinku Singh a deputy, but they are making a strong leadership core from the start. After finishing 8th in the point standings last year, the franchise is looking for a reset and a fresh start. Elevating the role of Rinku Singh is one of the most significant decisions made by the KKR management. Rinku Singh has always been an impactful finisher and the person who can light up the environment of the dressing room through his performance.

This decision will help the KKR management to always have a backup in the future. If by any chance Ajinkya Rahane struggles in his captaincy, Rinku Singh can step up and lead the team from the front.

Journey of Rinku Singh

The journey of Rinku Singh is one of the most inspiring stories of IPL, as he started his career with just 80 lakhs, and now he is set to become the vice captain of the team. He joined the KKR campaign back in 2018 as a fringe player. For multiple years, he was just a boy who used to warm benches and played only one or two matches without creating any impact.

The defining moment of his career came in IPL 2023, where he had 5 sixes against the Gujarat Titans. After that, he developed into one of the most lethal finishers in IPL, who scored continuously. In IPL 2026, his consistency and high strike rate in death overs allowed him to get a retention of INR 13 crore.
